Make your own color palette with the basic Pantone Formula Guide

Make your own color palette with the basic Pantone Formula Guide

it's fun. it's practical. it isn't expensive.

*********************************************************************************************************
Even if you do not work as a designer, you must have heard about Pantone! It is well known as the standard language for color communication between the ones who design and the ones who manufacture your design.

Start up designers or leisure crafters may consider only the basic Pantone Formula Guide, which is just a booklet of colors. While an upgraded version is the SOLID CHIPS one that not only you get the same booklet, you also have a whole bunch of the solid chip colors to mix and match on your work desk! I quite like the idea but the SOLID CHIPS version is much more expensive. So, you may hesitate.

If you like to do some crafting apart from your graphic designs [ that's me =) ], perhaps you'd love my below ideas that transform your basic Pantone Formula Guide into a workable color palette for yourself!

But you have to tear off the screw from the booklet to make them loose pages first. Feel SAD?! Don't worry, you can bind it back with a screw post anytime after. It's fun! It's practical! It isn't expensive!

Step 1
Select your desirable Pantone Formula Guide colors

Step 2
[Left] Draw Pantone Formula Guide's arrangement on paper.

[Right] Use the paper prepared as your stencil. Place it over a black cardboard sheet and cut along the lines to make slot openings on the black cardboard sheet below.

Step 3
[Left] Fix your chosen Pantone Formula Guide on the black cardboard sheet through the slot openings at two ends. Prepare some window movables out from your scrap of the black cardboard sheets.

[Right] Insert window movable(s) through the slot openings above and below each Pantone Formula Guide. Slide the window movable(s) along the Pantone Formula Guide for your chosen color(s).

Step 4
Make your own color palettes.

Step 5
Begin your design work with your lovely color palettes!

Warm Welcome Design with lovely pure white hydrangea

        Warm Welcome Design

                                                   - with lovely pure white hydrangea

by Pegeo 2013

************************************************************************************************************

For a fresh and lively afternoon wedding party, and for the fact that the couple wish something simple elegant, I have an idea flashed into my mind!

Ha, why not try a pure white hydrangea!

Perhaps, I am too fond of hydrangea  ...

§ Tailor Made Welcome Board §
for an afternoon Cocktail Wedding Party

§ Tailor Made Certificate Folder §
for a Wedding Ceremony

But I don't want the design to have too much white in color, partly because this wedding stationery set is for an afternoon party. Too much sunlight, if this is the weather on day of their wedding day, shedding on the artwork will make the design become flat and monotonous with the lost of most details.

So, I wish to get something creamy white, perhaps with some soft yellow and little green as the accessories for the pure white hydrangea in both the welcome board and the wedding certificate folder designs. My thought, after all, is to have a warm welcome bouquet that is eye-catching but still hold a simple elegant atmosphere.

And this is it!! I was lucky as I'm really not sure if I can get the soft yellow flowers that I want until the day I came to find out this perfect one! Creamy soft yellow in color, very tiny flower size. What a perfect match with the pure white hydrangea and the overall background paper!

Adding lace patch and pear drops, this is the design in my mind. And thanks for Erica for her message that both of them love it. Thanks for letting me know. This is the most rewarding part of being a designer.

AFTERWORD: During the time when I was doing this design job, I got an interview by the FACE magazine. So no doubt these welcome board and the half-finished wedding certificate folder had became the best targets for the photographer... and this is how they appeared on the page. =) Interesting, right!
